True story (see video below). A year or so ago some company liked my tweeting so much they gave me a FREE $200 dollar watch. Most of the other previous winners didn’t get their prize watch the video and find out why.
Oh and PS the lesson is NOT about tweeting. As you know or some of you know I no longer think Twitter is as viable as it used to be. I even wrote a classic about it called Twitter is failing.
Anyway below is a short video and a cool story behind receiving the watch. Also there is a very important lesson to remember.
I have a really cool section called POWERFUL IDEAS where I am sharing an outline of how to setup your business (I haven’t even do this on this site yet) .
Special Facebook exclusive Audio Podcast : coming ASAP featuring a LOT of ideas from a variety of people
Online Business Ideas for Transitioning from Twitter
My fellow Third Tribe brother and I were talking the other day and I was talking about my issues with twitter. I wrote awhile ago about Twitters Billion Dollar mistake. And recently I have shared some discoveries and insights. Unfortunately they keep making these mistakes over and over. So the real issue here is that they are
1. Ignoring their core audience by allowing several issues to develop
2. They are not checking the spammers who setup these phony accounts.
The last company that had this familiar pattern was MySpace. And we socially know what Facebook did to them right? I am not saying that Twitter is doomed and will disappear. Nor am I suggesting something drastic like get rid of all of your twitter accounts. I will however say that a transition is in order. I have communicated this months ago on my twitter program. In fact CNN has confirmed the issues I am seeing.
Online Business Ideas for Transitioning from Twitter
Begin to study your current social media mix. Look at where you can start to transition your audience to other mediums.
Create a escaping twitter email (I am doing this LOL) where people can keep connected to you and know your most recent contact info.
Create transitional twitter phrases (tweets) “hey connect with me at… enter social media and websites here”
Still continue to tweet on twitter with the full awareness of your group that you will have less activity from that end. I did the same thing in a niche site years ago when Facebook started blowing up.
Maintain only 3-8 active Social Media accounts. That way you can deal with them daily and or every other day.
My overall suggestion is continue on twitter with a heavy increase of your tweets to even out your social media audience across several sites. You need balance and quick.
Twitter is changing and not for the online entrepreneur good. Mark my words.
There are somewhere around 70,000 plus websites that vie for Twitter traffic and money. Some like Social Oomph (formerly Tweetlater.com) have positioned themselves as social media and away from the tweets (smart move). While others still dwell in twitterland.
Another downside to Twitter is that at anytime they can BAN your 3rd party site from using twitter. What I am saying in a nice way is that 3rd party Twitter sites are positioned poorly. One Twitter policy change and your model is in jeopardy.
And with their schizophrenic behavior anything is possible.
The following online business ideas are designed to help you reposition as well as remind you of what matters most.
Lets get to the facts and strait to the juglar
The FIRST goal of your sites is to make money right?
Your secondary goal should be building your lists. Remember you need a way to communicate to your potential clients that is totally independent of Twitter.
Your 3rd party users need to connect to you to blazes with Twitter.
As a 3rd party site you have to understand that Twitter is not your buddy or friend it is a social tool designed to help you leverage:
More email signups (build your list)
Sales
Partnerships
Grow your social media (twitter and non twitter)
PERIOD
1. Begin another site for “social media”: I wouldn’t have done what tweetlater did though it was still a smart move. Instead they should have kept tweet later and heavily promoted a new site. For SEO reasons that would have been a good move. A high traffic site linking to your new site would help you with whatever 2 to 3 keyword phrase you are targeting.
2. Compliment your 3rd party service NOT Twitter: Again it is all about YOU! If you have a twitter service for say scheduling tweets one of the smarter online business ideas would be to offer a great way to locate original non tweeted content for FREE. Users would signup to your email list and get the information or service.
3. Constantly communicate to your audience and connect with them: Remember no users no business. Don’t hide behind your company name. Think of it this way. How are you supposed to provide a premiere social media service and yet your not social? People buy online from people not companies and bots.
4. Find API opportunities with other social medias: Facebook, Linkedin, and others are major opportunities. Don’t put your eggs in one tweet basket.
5. Go Mobile apps: Tap into the billion dollar mobile market. Seems to be a very natural connection there.
Start pulling out your BEST online business ideas people! Get your assets in gear because a change is coming and the future is now. And your money is waiting for you! (more…)

Hey I am a big supporter of Twitter I am NOT closing my account or anything drastic. But I have noticed that people are getting a little too caught up in a plateauing trend. You may be spending too much time on them and your in trouble. That is one of the reasons I am actually cutting off one of my own revenue sources.
I almost guarantee you that if everyone is doing the same thing then something is wrong (laughing).
When the critics of Twitter are now teaching twitter usage then we have to re examine things. I am not saying don’t use twitter but to prepare for the next big social media.
I think the worst trap is to spend time building where people are not biting or connecting. Now are they doing that still at Twitter? Yes but differently than they did 6 months ago.
Diddy, Goldman Sachs, Google, and what happened
Though I wrote about Twitters Billion Dollar Mistake (forgive the retweet button count zeroed out after I did a permalinks change). A combination of things. Twitter changed it’s policies concerning it’s own TOS and decided that they were just going to let spammers run rampant. This is what i call the sign of MySpace. Spammers to this day reak havoc on their email system. And as we know Twitter has done NOTHING in the last year to stop the dreaded DM issue.
Then there are other sites rising up and working hard to get the twitter audience and woo the 3rd party developers.
But in this article they outlined in 2009 how they were partnering with Goldman Sachs. They said “Diddy values his contribution higher than we do”. WOW. Then they listed Marissa Mayer Google’s Product Chief as a “huge distraction”.
Something is very WRONG in Twitterland. Ever saw one of those movies where the forest people see the birds suddenly flying from the trees and the animals acting differently? YUP. Something is not right in Twitterland.
And it is not like it is the first time it has happened right?
Ways as I post this to socially connect with me
But keep checking my about me section. That is the most recent always.
Code Cracking Online Business Ideas for Exploding Your Traffic
After setting up your content development strategy on your blog you need a solidified yet creative way to get free traffic. OK this isn’t one of those typical “crack the code” blog posts that has the same old rehashed crap. I stand by my words here. There really is a code. But not the code you think it is because good old Darren is NOT following the freakin rules man (or woman)! Nothing illegal but definitely not the norm. Following the rules and being “normal” will cement your grave on the internet.
There are 2 different (yet not so different) schools of thought. Seems like on one side you have Social Media and the other Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Each sides bloggers have some not so nice words for the other.
And then there is me. I use both. SEO is not nearly as hard as bloggers make it out to be. I actually have some funny stories about SEO. I also have some amazing stories about Social Media as well.
Both have tremendous opportunities and challenges.
Social Media is a quick and easy way to draw FREE traffic if done correctly. The challenge for social media is that today’s MySpace is tomorrow Twitter. You have to keep going at it and stay ahead of the trend. I am explaining to thousands of online business around the world that as I write this Twitter is plateauing. I am also explaining the fabulous opportunity for document marketing with Scribd. But the downside to social media is that even with automation you have to work it everyday no real shortcuts. I will say that again “no shortcuts” don’t let people fool you into thinking that they exist. That is how you get your profiles banned.
SEO or Search Engine Optimization is an excellent long term way to get FREE traffic from Google and other search engines. There is a learning curve because it is not as simple as 123. However where it trumps Social Media is that your traffic is highly targeted. The challenging side is that like Social Media sites Google can decide to BAN you if they want for no reason. I know a guy who’s site was labeled as a adult site (even though it wasn’t) and it went downhill from there. Another downside is that it does take time for natural organic traffic to happen with SEO.
The truth about Social Media and SEO is that there is a CODE to both
Break the code in Social Media and you look like a immature high school student at a strip club. Or even worst that obnoxious ass at a social gathering trying to glad hand you and sell something every 15 minutes.
Break the code in SEO and your going to be one lonely internet puppy. You will hear echos in your blog (laughing). Hello hello hello?? Anyone there there there?
I am not saying you should be a Social Media compliant or an SEO writing bot. I am saying that you should focus on being authentically you. That means that you write how you normally write but it wouldn’t hurt to use a non heavily competitive 3 keyword phrase every now and then. I am also saying it wouldn’t hurt to just help someone without twittering BUY MY THIS OR THAT 24/7.
So what do we do? How do we Crack the Code?
I don’t want to publish a generic boring list of suggestions. You know the type that most of you have probably seen. The yawners like “treat people right on Social Media” or the classic “use good key phrases.” Well DUH (laughing).
Instead throw on your interesting hat (not the black one LOL) and come with me. Lets really use what is already across the internet to produce some really great online business ideas. So don’t worry I won’t be doing that GURU stuff where I play like this is such a highly guarded secret.
The only real and honest no lie secret is embedded in application and aggregation.Meaning that the information out there isn’t a secret. The way in which the information is aggregated and applied is the REAL secret. Now lets get to the code breaking!
This strategy involves both long term (SEO) and short term (Social Media) traffic.
There are 3 modules to focus on daily, weekly, and monthly. But before I go into details here I want you to understand that it is simplicity that wins the game. Don’t try to do everything. Focus on 3-5 social medias and that’s it. Also focus on 3-5 key word phrases. keyword phrases not one keywords are one of the SEO keys to you getting ranking. The other keys are listed in the modules below.
Module 1 Foundation: you need to be focusing on building both your SEO in your website and your Social Media network. You must begin to understand that using Twitter and Scribd and other networks are great ways to do link building. Link building is gaining links to your site from other highly popular sites. It is how Google determines rank (well one of the ways anyway). Understand that Keyword phrases (2 -3 word phrases) and some authoritative links are key to getting you to the top of Google. Also understand that Social Media can help you build those links while building your relationships and brand.
Module 2 Growth: This means both growing your Social Media following and SEO keyword density. Basically I am saying that the larger you build your Social Network (within your niche) and keep using target keyword phrases. The better you will expand your online presence.
Module 3 Consistency: consistently doing modules 1 and 2. The more consistent you are the better. Also this increases your chances of developing relationships through Social Media and establishing authority through SEO.
In each module you are using both Social Media and SEO to benefit each other. There is a limitless amount of things you can do to build your online presence.
But here is the last key ingredient. Have no systematic way of building your keywords, links, and social media communication. Why? because Google sniffs a system and your SEO end is in trouble. If both your Social Media following and the owners of those Social medias sense something then your also in trouble.
Martial Arts Legend and Philosopher Bruce Lee said he didn’t have a style. Hey used all styles as needed. He was the water not the glass that held the water. Water forms to the shape of it’s environment.
Cracking the code to explosive traffic involves knowing the codes of both SEO and Social Media. Then Then systematically not using a system.
Online Business Ideas for Exploding Your Traffic
Now that you know the REAL code. Below are 3 online business ideas to use them with.
Create a contest targeting keywords and spread across your social media profiles
Create a series for both your blog and for social medias. Create a series on each social media (I have done a million of them on titter like 24 Twitter thoughts and linked back to my blog.
Create a keyword phrase that has connected to your social media following. I did #twitterhug a hash tag for twitter. By the way it was like 100 something retweets BEFORE I changed my permalinks and tweetmeme zeroed out thousands of my retweet records, bummer right?
There are tons of online business ideas you can develop with this method.
Eyeball Popping Online Business Ideas for Document Marketing
Listen to my message here
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
OK so you have heard me talk about Scribd (actually pronounced: “Scribbd”). But some of you have asked me for more details. So I am going to discuss exactly what document marketing is and how it is more powerful than many other forms of internet marketing. Creating a site like Scribd is one of the best online business ideas I have seen. I lead in 23 secret niches on Scribd from my niche marketing business. And I am revvi9ng up in the next few weeks to gain presence from my main profile (actual name vs. pen names) which until now I haven’t used.
Document marketing is another form of article marketing.Like article marketing you bring more links to your site. But the difference is your creating more content and establishing your credibility through quality statistical data like graphs or PDF reports and guides. So the article s are not published but easily uploaded on their site.
It is like having (hint hint) a portion of your blog in a PDF document and sharing with others in return for links. But that’s only the beginning. You can also include “in-text” links and pictures, which sets it ahead of the crowd. Especially if you’re using Scribd for self-promotion. You can also create certain types of advertisements but you have to follow their guidelines. They don’t play about banning people. In fact they even erased a ton of content that people were using to plagiarize others works. So even though Techcrunch calls Scribd “Youtube for Documents” be well aware they do care a lot more about who adds what to their website.
Plus Google loves it when you add more content to other sites and you have a link back to yours. But here is the biggest plus. Scribd is “the largest social publishing company in the world” with over 50 million readers a month. Twitter has over 75 million but according to recent sources most are inactive users. The majority of Twitter and Facebook doesn’t use them. What this means is that there is a virtual untapped market.
You can cross market your products in small sneak peak, e-course fashion via Scribd. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
Look at several of these online business ideas you can market
• Books
• Brochures & Catalogs
• Business & Law
• Creative Writing
• Government Docs
• How-to-Guides & Manuals
• Illustrations & Maps
• Magazines & Newspapers
• Presentations & Slideshows
• Puzzles & Games
• Recipes & Menus
• Research
• Resumes & CVs
• School Work
• Spreadsheets
Hey there is a ton of opportunity waiting for you this isn’t a fly by night website they been around since 2007. The real question becomes “How do you market yourself the right way without looking dumb?” Learn from my mistakes and embarrassment in one niche.
I don’t think anyone would argue that one of your smartest online business ideas involves anticipating trends on the web. Those who can anticipate them sooner than later become the leaders on the web.
Twitter Sale Now until 5pm USA Eastern Time TODAY April 22nd now until 5pm. You get over 25 videos over 20+ audio, an lots of written material about Twitter. I have run this program for over a year and it is more than worth its one time price.
As you may have read from my Twitter program is ending its open public enrollment. Here is why. I think Twitter is plateauing. And when something plateaus I think we need to start transitioning. Ning has proven this with the latest shock announcement that they are now charging to use their social network. Well guess what? No one site should control all of your network.
I am very forward thinking and would like to be on the future trends 12 -24 months ahead. And I just don’t think that this will be the trend to follow. I am NOT saying twitter will end in 12 -24 months unless of course something dramatic happens. I am saying that twitters influence will not be a strong as it was in the past.
So here is one of your only chances to honestly and ethically build your list.
Online Business Ideas for People Who Spam Facebook
This post is going to be short and sweet.
You ever get an email to a bunch of events you never gave anyone permission to send you? There is this obnoxious thought. A thought that says that just because you friended them. They have some given right (wrong) to email you over and over. Not personal emails but promotional ones. Now if they want to put that on their Facebook profile well that’s their call. And if they send something to their email list from a group. Also their call and we can’t say anything because after all we joined the group.
But to completely produce a email just because they can and promote it to people who never asked you for it? Wrong move.
The following are online business ideas and alternative options for people who spam Facebook
Develop a fan page and tell others via email but email them directly individually. And do it only ONCE.
Cross partner with other fan pages there is a spot you can list them as a fav fan page (bottom left)
Ask your hardcore supporters to ask their (only interested) friends to join your fan page.
Invite others via Twitter to join your page thus informing them of the event.
The point here is that there are other options than rudely emailing your “friends” your promotions like an uninvited email. You have to begin to find other strategies that reach your target audience. Sending unwanted emails gets you ignored. You lose credibility in your niche / field. And you can get reported on a massive scale to Facebook.
I have been sharing some amazing kick butt ideas for Twitter for a few years now. And even though I sense some serious changes coming on Twitter I wanted to share some ideas.
I have shared some great ideas from one of the coolest twitter posts I have ever done called “15 of The Coolest Things I Learned from Twitter Friends.” In this article I talk about the humor, the discussion with a billionaire, and other great things online.
And this is the funny article (see the cartoon with the character named “Darren” (no relation). I talk in here about the Twitter Laws of Attraction. Look at law 3 which is amazing. Because most people DO NOT follow that law especially the so called Social Media experts.
One of the BEST ways I can help you is for you to signup to my FREE 7 Step twitter excel program. No tricks or gimmicks. Just real online business ideas to help you grow on Twitter.
The truth is that Twitter is not going to be what it was or sis very long. Time is wasting and you nee to take serious advantage of the opportunities.
Since its creation in late 2008 I have seen a lot of my students build their followings and create an awesome grouping. But storm clouds are ahead and Twitter has and continues to “change” in a not so good way.
I have decided to close my enrollment for good to the public as ofSaturday May 1st 2010 7:00pm USA Eastern time. This is not a scarcity ploy, gimmick or trick. IF you have been reading this blog for a while you know that I am a progressive forward thinker. Ever since co founder Biz Stones not so genius idea to change their TOS (terms of service) in 2009 I have sensed that Twitter has opened itself for some serious issues. This is not the same Twitter I joined or trained people for a year and a half ago.
MySpace was taught this lesson well years ago. What is here now can be a fad 24 months from now.
It is now time to take our Twitter members to the next level.
So if you have been looking for something that is going to give you an EDGE not only on Twitter but across ALL social medias then I highly suggest you get involved before public access closes.
What this means
All current members will benefit exclusively because we are about to do some very inside moves together
The program will continue BUT we are not opening it to the public
Social Media Lessons from a 24 Hour Online Marathon
Get lots of sleep ! NO I am kidding of course (laughing). I alluded to the biggest lesson in this post in my article Online Business Ideas for Creating Products Through Twitter. You see I have been doing this for 2 years now across roughly 3 – 7 Social Media websites. And each time I learn something new and interesting.
And I have been retweeted to roughly 95% of Twitter because of events like this. In fact Twitter has changed just as much as Social Media has changed. With the invention of lists it has become very important to develop quality tweets. People don’t have to watch their general twitter streams not like those with tweetdeck and hootsuite were doing that anyway. But now the paradigm has really changed with the addition to lists.
Linkedin has stepped up also since the recession because of the need for jobs. Add more direct communication needs and you have a massive opportunity. In fact Linkedin installed a twitter like similar microblog function on their updates section.
And of course Google Buzz is really blazing to take over the entire micro blog niche or at least dominate it.
Facebook continues to dominate but with them “talking” about more monetization that may be a serious issue in the future.
Probably the MOST POWERFUL thing I did during this marathon was to find out via url shorteners exactly WHAT people are interested in via my networks. Across all of the social medias I used I was able to gauge the specific interest of my network. This means that I was able to see what a network of now over 100,000 people wanted. The other advantage is that this data came streaming in across the world and around the clock.
Yes my marathon was about promoting my ebook. However the additional goldmine was the DATA. So I am able to better my content on this blog and create more powerful products and services. All fine tuned to a target audience.
Ask yourself what events can you create online to generate three things. Sales, email RSS feed signups, and most importantly opinion without surveys.
Last year I was up on Twitter for 24 hour and tweeted around the clock. This year I am tweeting for 24 hours strait around the clock on several social medias. I am doing this on Friday March 19th 2010.
Why? This year it is to promote my new 101 Fresh Online Business Ideas for Spring 2010 and I will share over 1000 ideas across several social medias.
Everything from sales conversions to email list building to product creation and more.
Anyone that purchases my ebook (only $10 buck money back guarantee) will get another ebook I am making containing the 1000+ 24 hour marathon.
Do you have ANY idea how many hidden money making ideas are in your twitter Tweets?! I have heard a entire slew of GURU’s or as Ben Settle calls them “GooRoos” talk about not following back on twitter. That without a doubt in my mind has to be one of THE dumbest things I have heard of on twitter.
So wait everyone should follow you and then you follow back your special “chosen ones” ? And the past excuse was “oh I can’t read that many tweets hard to follow” yeah right like they can’t aggregate with Tweetdeck and Hootsuite available to say the least.
And now they really have no excuse. Because with the invention of lists on twitter you can’t complain any longer. The excuses are officially over for those so called leaders of twitter. So here is where the money making ideas part comes in because these same entrepreneurs are always trying to sell you ways to make money while stepping over the most significant online business ideas of the decade!
Twitter allows you to find out what your customers want without directly asking them. No other social media as I write this has that advantage. Just sit there and watch your twitter stream I almost guarantee you you will see some money making ideas just from watching
1. What others are doing in your field and or niche.
2. You find problems to solve for your market.
Remember the best online business ideas and money making ideas involve solving a problem. Solve the problems and you will NEVER be short of business that I guarantee. But if you constantly talk of your concern for cutting yourself off with your followers then your in trouble. Conversation is the brand but who respects someone who only has a speaker part of the phone? Come on Twitter leaders don’t cut off the follow backs and then wonder (and even tweet) why your mentally stuck for ideas for your blog, products, and marketing online.
Is it really about YOU on Twitter? This is a short post about a serious concern that I have about Internet marketers on Twitter.
There has been a recent trend where certain Internet marketers are dropping all of the people they follow. They are saying that they can’t reasonably follow the tens sometimes hundreds of thousands of followers. Whats worst is that they don’t read their DM’s which I can somewhat understand. Because the SPAM DM’s being sent. But if the only way people have to contact you is to @reply back and you don’t even do that then WOW (wonder of wonders).
It is as if you took a phone and broke off the receiver end.
It is as if you sent emails to your email list from a “no-reply email” (a BIG email marketing no no).
And there is no excuse with the creation of lists to say you have issues following everyone. One of the greatest ways to see what people following you are actually thinking and doing and you are breaking off communication? Big mistake.
To add insult to injury I recently received an email from a famous blogger who was explaining WHY he was dropping his followers. Yet the email after that one he is advising his readers to follow back on Twitter. Plus he is advising them to sell advertisements on their twitter messages (tweets) which I am 1000% against.
Maybe that’s why I have issues being called a “Internet Marketer” vs someone who does marketing on the Internet.
The REAL question isn’t “Is Social Media a Fad?” The real question is which strategies are fads? Remember TV wasn’t a Fad but how often do you see a western run consistently on prime time TV?
This was one of the most interesting trades of a online social media I have seen. What makes it interesting is that Frank the original sender doesn’t know any of us. And despite sending the email which is actually spam he has a tremendous opportunity to as I say “Enforce his Endorsement”. I don’t endorse anything I can’t enforce.
I Frank seems to have taken my last comment to heart. I hope you do too. Sending Facebook emails to your friends is a BAD thing unless you know them and they are expecting the email (thus giving permission and thus not spam).
But missing out on a great conversation from people is the worst thing you could do. As Seth Godin says the conversation IS the brand.
Frank received invaluable feedback by us who for the most part though justifiably critical were nice and offered suggestions for him to grow. Make Franks lesson your own.
OK this is what it says (and YES Russell has a point) “Take a look around and enjoy yourself. Think of JVME as a clean, high tech playground for Internet Marketers like you and I. Make new friendships and business contacts while keeping up to date with everything going on in our world. We have a bunch of cool things coming soon, so keep coming back to our Joint Venture Social Network.”
JV= Money we could socialize anywhere. Talk about better partnerships difference between JV and CPA programs etc. But Playground?? Hmmmm No time to play
spammers = desperate
agreed Russell.
I’m sending to all so maybe someone get’s IT!
This here is like you “Making a internet marketing Newsletter” and going into gmail and selecting all of your contacts and sending a professional newsletter to all of them.
Who sent this anyway? I want to delete you as a friend so i don’t have to get these anymore and waste my time opening them!
@David it’s also like a morbidly obese man coming to your door uninvited and telling you that you should join his fitness club because it’s a place full of healthy, motivated, knowledgeable, and hard-working individuals.
I don’t understand why people think they can get people to join a social media program when they make it obvious right off the bat that they themselves don’t know how to use social media.
This site has some sort of auto invite feature which sends a message to your contacts from what I can tell. So yes slightly spammy but it’s not really anything worse then the ones that login to your gmail and email all your contacts.
lol… I agree Russell!
those aren’t much better… I agree with that Reed…
No one want’s to be bugged unless they “Opt-in” or ask for it.
Did You send this Darren?
Zaibatsu (財閥?, literally plutocrats or financial clique) is a Japanese term referring to industrial and financial business conglomerates in the Empire of Japan, whose influence and size allowed for control …
Also Frank, if you believe that this website/group is valuable, why don’t you try making friends with people. If your website/group really is valuable and your friends enjoy it, they will promote it for you.
Also share knowledge for free that pertains to this group. I have done a 101eBook ideas to promote my ebook about writing ebooks. It was free. I have done niche marketing Idea’s and Motivational idea’s to promote self created or affiliate programs.
If they like it (via your group or fan page) they will buy and refer to others about your free material.
Also Frank if there is one thing I think we all have in common (the people who responded) is that we GIVE A DARN!
The average response is usually ERASE and drop you as a friend. Out of the literally billions of messages trading back an forth on FB alone if you think this strand of messages is a BAD thing or coincidence then your wrong.
Take the advice don’t take the advice but remember this Frank feedback doesn’t come often on the web. Why? Because it is easier for people to call someone an ass in the comfort of their homes and erase the email and drop and block you.
Welcome to the land of permission marketing.
I hope you mentally double optin on this message and the others in the strand.
I only signed up to this website and then it asks me if I wanted to invite some friends to it automatically. I don’t know if any of you has received more than message from me, i hope not.
If this is the case then it comes from the website not from me, anyway I do apologize for any harm I did to all of you.
I’m really not that kind of Marketer even if I have a hard way getting to the success side.
Hope that helps
Facebook has been buying up all of the domains with the name Facebook. No surprise move but the issue here is that recently according to Mashup.com they went to the UN (yes the United Nations) to get a domain (Facebook.ir) from a guy in Iran that supposedly owned the domain. Unconfirmed reports via Mashups comment section said he was compensated 100€ euros to US currency that’s $142 dollars as I post this. International rates always change.
So Facebook can have free Iran fan pages but at the same time they are using the UN to gangster the little guy for their domain?
Free election but not free to prosper? More disappointing is Mashup.com writer Ben Parr’s comment where he wrote “There’s really no claim you can make that justifies owning a Facebook domain. Unless, of course, your name is actually Facebook.” Wait one minute Ben I know it is your opinion and I respect that but since when do you need to have a justified reason to own a web domain? You certainly don’t in America or anywhere else for that matter. The only reason I see Facebook doing this in a justified way is if somehow the guy owned the site illegally. But there is no evidence to support that.
UN = Unfair Negotiations
I highly encourage everyone reading this to grab as much Facebook webestate as possible! ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE NOT FROM AMERICA. They wouldn’t have dared pull this on Americans. One of the most uncool things FB has done yet.
PS Facebooknazi.com IS available! The only reason I didn’t grab it is that I am uncomfortable with the “Nazi” word. Even if in this case it doesn’t refer to Germany’s Nazis. Most of you know that I am referring to the hilarious comedy skit created by the Seinfeld show “Soup Nazi”.
What the Xing?! Last weekend I asked for feedback from Xing. Xing is similar to Linkedin as they are marketing online business professionals. The problem is that I don’t understand the difference between and XING and Linkedin and guess what? XING doesn’t want to explain it. I asked one simple question that I am posing here for either comment or contact me directly.
Whats the difference between XING and Linkedin?
That wasn’t a question designed to get XING to speak unprofessionally about Linkedin. I wanted to know why the heck I or anyone else should join ANOTHER social network when they have a similar vibe to Linkedin.
If I was searching for full time employment I understand. But WHY should I or you signup if that is not the case? Below was their answer:
“Thank you for your email. As all companies are different in there own ways I am unable to go into details or give specific details to your request. We offer some things that LinkedIn does not have and LinkedIn may offer things we do not. This is the difference between all companies.”
“If you would like to know more about our company please click on the links below.”
HUH?! So it’s OK for your members to invite (interrupt?) their friends and social network connections to join you but it is not OK to explain WHY we should add yet another social network to our lives? Or at the very least clarify how you differentiate from your competitor?
The only thing I see is that they are based in Germany and globally marketing themselves. OK…………..
WHY Entrepreneur Should Pay Attention to This
You must differentiate from your competitors. That doesn’t mean discrediting them. But you should use a comparison chart. Search engine Bing is having this challenge. They can’t successfully differentiate from Google. Plus since as Seth Godin says “Google isn’t broke” it becomes more difficult to clarify your uniqueness. Same issue with other micro blogs competing with Twitter. If we have Twitter why do we need you? Honestly I think Micro blogs have a heaver fight against Twitter than Bing against Google. Who doesn’t want all the Search Engine traffic they can use for FREE without doing much? But another micro blog to manage? Hmmm I think not. Not for now anyways.
Too Many Social Medias and not enough Social Masters: I have a saying and it holds true it is not about doing 5000 things it’s about doing 5 things 1000 times. Don’t join a social network just to join. I turn down at least 30 – 50+ offers a week to join social networks. Why? I have enough networks as it is and only a insanly misguided person joins 30+ networks. Jack of all, master of none? Sound familiar? Now I am not saying to not join a lot of groups. But you don’t need to join all.
Linkedin has a XING group which I posted the same “Whats the difference between XING and Linkedin? ” question on their forum and will let you know what they say.
Entrepreneurs take my advice and FOCUS . Just because there is a network of millions doesn’t mean you should be there.
XING take my advice and game up and clearly explain yourself. Don’t think that since you have millions on your network that you don’t have to explain yourself. Let MySpace, AOL, Yahoo, and others be clear examples to you that millions now could mean marooned later.
**UPDATE** XING Responds on comments
Official Repsonse from XING (taken from comments section)
Hello Darren,
As requested, we gladly provide our perspective towards your question that was answered by our colleague from customer care department. Needless to say, XING as a company and a business platform has USPs and we do not need to fear to be compared to competitors. However, we ourselves would prefer to point out our strengths and unique features.
We are, to name some of our distinctive strengths, the only SSL-encrypted social network in the world, including our recently launched OpenSocial based XING Partner Ecosystem that started with 16 applications from 13 partners, thus more than any other business networking platform. You also find information on our blog in five languages – for instance, have a look at Features & More in our English blog. ( http://blog.xing.com/category/features-and-more )
Besides technical innovations found in the blog, what makes a social network valuable is its community. For instance, with our events tool, we also offer members the possibility to network offline, with more than 90,000 events per year. Also, XING empowers networking with XING Regional Ambassadors and the newly-launched XING Xpert Ambassador Program.
And of course you can try that out for yourself and join the network for free. Like many web services and social networks, we also offer premium features to give more value to users – and more than 600 thousand members are convinced by these XING features and pay the monthly fee, making us the no 1. network worldwide when it comes to payers.
Should you have any more questions, please do not hesitate to contact me via e-mail (that’s Christian.Burtchen@xing.com).
Kind regards,
Christian Burtchen
XING AG, Corporate Communication
My response
OK First Christian thank you for responding. I really don’t think you actually answered the original question and it has nothing to do with having fear of being compared to your competitors. It has to do with differentiation through comparison i.e. charts.
I think you should let the people who use your service answer this in the future. Below are the pros and cons from people in the XING Group on Linkedin. You should use this type of feedback when asked that question.
XING Group on Linked in responses (thanks guys really appreciate the response)
Stephan Koß Senior Consultant at ITP Unternehmensberatung
“LinkedIN is international, Xing more national (D / A and Turkey)
LinkedIN has more than seven times more members
LinkedIN has a better search function (Geo Targeting and similar)
LinkedIN has more High Potentials
LinkedIN has better functions for basis member
LinkedIN has recommendations (I Think, it would be the next part, xing is copiing)
LinkedIN integrated popular Applications (Amazon, Google)
LinkedIN Q & A Area is integrated, so you can profile as an expert
But Xing is not bad,
Xing has a better group solution (HTML in group descriptions)
Xing`s GUI is nicer
Xing has a sympathetic Support”
Ralph Delzepich
Database Administrator at RWTH Aachen
“XING is a German based company that developed their product along with their german users. the main difference to me is the way of a persons representation and reputation.
xing on the one hand works with the data entered in ones profile, along with the things you offer and/or you are looking for. this is one of the way to find people, looking for interests. The second point – and this is so far the biggest difference to LinkedIn – is the way you behave in the groups offered by other users. Show your affiliations, take part in discussions, contact other members. The group functionality is whar I would call the xing killer feature.
LinkedIn on the other hand is more the “real” networking. You can only contact other people using your (trusted) network (or you pay for it). You gain your reputation from recommendation or show your expertise answering questions in topics well known to you.
When it comes to money, LinkedIn might seem more expensive. But as I pointed out before you can enlarge your own network by using your contacts – this makes a trusted networking at no cost. Using xing, you must pay about 5€ a month to be able to write messages to any person on the plattform – even your own contacts (but there is a trick to avoid that) – or contact a person straightaway, but this cold contacting might not be everybodys favourite networking model.
I would be glad to answer more in-depth questions on how things are dealt with on the xing platform. ”
Andreas Thaler
Commercial Application Leader Europe and India at Momentive Performance Materials
“Linkedin groups suck, as there is no discussion at all in most (at least the ones I know).
That is for me the value of XING, the discussions are much more lively. People interact on a more personal basis, offer positions and advice to your questions. If you want, then it’s not just about business, but also about the person behind it.
Also, IMO XING is a little more subtle as far as data privacy is concerned. Offers like screening your outlook or yahoo email (which i concern a potential data privacy nightmare) are not thrust on you as aggressively as with Linkedin”
David Hesse
Technical Support Professional
“I think that both are more or less the same and have their importance in certain areas of the world.. Xing is better known in continental Europe while LinkedIn is more internatonal. It all depends where you want to present yourself. If you dont care about Europe then you are certainly better off with LinkedIn. If you want your profile to be found in Mainland Europe then you better focus on Xing”
Erich Niklas
Business Manager Power EMEA at Cree
“David Hesse is right. Central Europe uses XING; if you’d like to go global then LinkedIn is the right platform. I use both”
I have chosen my words carefully as I write this so I please ask that you read this in it’s entirety before commenting.
First I would like to acknowledge a few things before I continue.
1. This is not a article attacking nor praising Perry Belcher. I wanted to establish this comment first. I want to share the truth which involves as many facts that I could provide. The truth to me involves the good, the bad, and the ugly. And the reality is that each and every one of you reading this including myself each have all three in our history.
2. I waited until Perry was almost sold out of his recent program before publishing this as to be fair and not look as though I was writing this to in some way (if only in a minuscule way) to derail his promotional efforts.
I believe this is a very important point because as many of you know I have a Twitter program that I have created as well. So as to not look biased but fair. Or as fair as I could given that I too am a Internet professional.
Who is Perry Belcher? Allow me to give you the short version. Perry started out in internet marketing and as a entrepreneur some years back. He has been promoting a variety of products throughout the years. Perry Belcher more than any other marketer (including Filsaime and Kern) invokes a lot of emotion both negative and positive.
Perry Belcher the Good News and the Bad News
You know the old saying “I got good news and I have bad news?” There was a study many years ago that pointed out that over 90% ask for the bad news first. So I am going to discuss the bad news first.
The Bad News
In 2008 Perry got into trouble when he was promoting his then company (Selmedica) products.
“Belcher’s arrest is the result of an intensive investigation conducted by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and the D.A.’s White Collar Crime Unit in coordination with the Federal Drug Administration (FDA), the United States Postal Inspector, and the Tennessee Department of Revenue.”
It goes on further to say that
“The local investigation started after several individuals notified the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) Internet Crime Complaint Center that they had possibly been defrauded by an internet company called Selmedica.”
“According to the affidavit of complaint filed in this case, Belcher owns and operates Selmedica, a company that claims on its website that it manufactures products to treat a wide array of ailments. The company claims to have made every product it sells in a “state of the art facility under the strict guidelines of the FDA’s Good Manufacturing Process.”
The affidavit goes on to say that Selmedica sells or has sold products it claims can treat attention deficit disorder, irritable bowl syndrome, head lice, female and male infertility, chronic body odor, yeast infections, scabies, ringworm infections, poison ivy, depression and anxiety, shingles, high blood pressure, hives, eczema, vertigo, pink eye, warts and migraines, among others. The company also sells or has sold products that it claims aids in weight loss, sleep deprivation, and hangovers.”
“Additionally, the affidavit states that Perry Belcher or his companies have sold e-books claiming to be written by medical experts. The affidavit says that the investigation revealed these books are not, in fact, written by medical professionals.”
Lastly the affidavit read “the Better Business Bureau of the Mid South has received more than 100 complaints over the past seven years on Selmedica, Perry Belcher and his business partners. Belcher has also done business, the affidavit says, as Selmedica Affiliates, Selmedica Healthcare, Increase Media, HealthyRightNow.com, Spring Time Herbs, Perry M. Belcher Companies, Gotcha Marketing, and AMI, Inc.”
In September of 2008 Perry Belcher according to documents from the Shelby Country Sheriffs department pleaded guilty to the offense of computer crimes over $60,000.
Since this incident as many of you know Perry and his family has moved to Austin Texas.
The Good News
Perry Belcher has some interesting idea’s about Social media. His greatest opponents couldn’t argue that the man is indeed onto something. Some claim he did that with the help of assistants etc. Maybe he did maybe he didn’t but the point is it’s there. If his following is fake as some may claim then it would have shown up during the infamous Twitter drop in followers. But he only lost around 3,000 followers out of over 100,000 of his Twitter followers. I lost 2,000 on that infamous day.
The party philosophy is a great video (and funny)
Again even if you don’t like the guy you have to admit (at least to yourself) that this was entertaining.
—————————————————————-
Do I Endorse Perry Belcher?
This is the basis of why I wrote this article. Many clients and business partners sent me emails as soon as Perry’s recent program began to launch. I found myself at odds. Like any online entrepreneur I would like to earn money. And his most recent project costs a minimum of almost a thousands dollars.
So an affiliate split totals up to a lot of money for a person like me that heads a company with a social network following in the early 6 figures across 50+ niche sites. In fact I have been in several online / phone meetings about Perry’s launch. Both partners and clients alike wondering if they should consider doing business with him.
I didn’t endorse Perry’s program and here is why: I think it would be hypocritical of me to talk about Internet ethics in the many ways I have on this site. And then promote a person who pleaded guilty of a computer crime involving the Internet. Even if I thought he was a interestingly entertaining guy with some clever idea’s. There was also concerns within my client list. I wont go into details because it is unfair to both the clients (who didn’t want to divulge their info in detail to confirm) and Perry (who has enough rumors and hearsay floating around about him).
I stand behind my name and believe as I say in one of my quotes that you should “enforce what you endorse.” I also stand behind the affiliate programs I endorse. In the last six months I have endorsed Six Minutes to Success even though there are heavy critics of Bob Proctor because of his international hit Book/DVD The Secret. I have endorsed Niche Profit Classroom because I know this is and excellent program. And in both cases I have actual proof through my business and personal life that they work.
Also of course I enforce the endorsement of my products and services. But to endorse Perry means (by my own words) that I have to defend and or enforce my endorsement. Given the current evidence I have presented in this article I do not believe nor am I comfortable with doing so.
“Darren We Should Forgive Perry!”
I have seen this argument across the web in defense of Perry. But you should think carefully about commenting across the web that defense. Let me first define “we.” We is me and anyone else that hasn’tdone any business with Perry. We is also anyone that has done business with Perry and didn’t have negative results. My point here is why should “we” forgive Perry for something he hasn’t done to us? Perry hasn’t done anything wrong to me so he doesn’t owe me or anyone else (who hasn’t had a negative business experience with him) an apology. As far as I am concerned there is nothing to forgive.
“Darren Perry Belcher is Internet Satan!”
People like me who have not done any business with Perry: How is hating Perry going to help your business? The answer is that it doesn’t. If you want to avoid him and his products and services OK. But the forum and web attacks are a waste of your most valuable resource. Your time! I am more than sure you could be more productive with your life.
Here is a little Internet secret. Any and everyone with any Internet experience has been robbed by someone online. So don’t think it was just you. In fact it’s a requirement that we get taken for a scam. Why? Call it trial and error due to an unfortunate reality. It is like a batter striking out in baseball to a questionable curve ball. I am not defending Perry. I am saying that if your argument for the public attacks on Perry is based on the fact that you can’t stand people who scam others. Then you will be wasting a LOT of time. Because there are a LOT of Internet scams. Put your energy to work on things that matter and STOP wasting time with people, places, and things that don’t.
“Darren Perry Belcher Took My Money!”
If you have had a negative experience with Perry or even worst were one of the people who complained to the FBI and or the Better Business Bureau. I am truly sorry to learn that you believe you were wronged. Especially if you were (or still are) sick. The idea that anyone would sell a sick person medicine that doesn’t work sounds horrific. I cannot say for sure that Perry did or didn’t do that. Nor do I think it is my place to do so. However if you believe you have suffered because of Perry. Please know the following.
The Laws of the Universe dictate that what you project shall be returned to you. Whatever wrong Perry or anyone else has done will be equated by God not by man. Any debts will be paid in that manner.
Your priority is on your sickness. I guarantee that there is enough people watching Perry Belcher. FOCUS on your ailment. And know that many prayers are with you for a healthy recovery
Forgive Perry for YOU not for him. The quicker you forgive that man I guarantee you a burden will be released from your soul. Forgiveness has nothing to do with whom you forgive. Forgiveness for others involves embracing your inner peace. I will take it even one step further and say pray for Perry and anyone involved with that company.
“Darren Should I buy Perry’s Products?”
I have explained earlier in this article why I cannot endorse nor enforce that endorsement of Perry Belcher at this time. I however think you should do your own homework. Each of your knowledge levels are different. Some may not believe Perrys information is helpful and others may find it enlightening.
As I said earlier I think his idea’s are interesting. But I have personally taken Perry’s information with a Ying Yang approach.
Ying (good info): His idea of webinars is a good one. My mentors have been trying to get me to do them since 2006 LOL! And Perry has a good approach to this method.
Yang (bad or at the very least incorrect info):I have a challenge with one of his special reports “How to Monetize Social Media” Perry wrote:
Some autoresponder services such as Aweber.com do not allow importing, so I have a separate autoresponder setup with services like iContact.com and ConstantContact.com. They’re more expensive, but they do allow you to import contacts in bulk.
I have two distinct issues with Perrys statement.
1. This is incorrect. Aweber who I endorse does in fact allow you to import subscribers. But you must do the following things before they allow you to add them.
You’ll need to tell them where they came from which I think is a fair request.
You’ll be able to import up to 2000 at a time (if you have a lot of subscribers, say more than 10,000, they ask that you contact them to discuss what can be done). Now I could fairly understand if this was an issue for Perry but keep in mind A Weber is endorsed by legendary Internet marketer Yanik Silver as well who surely has more than 10,000 people on his list.
The people on your list before being imported need to confirm their interest in receiving emails from you. Like any permission marketing email list what Aweber is saying is that you need to confirm opt in. If your people actually signed up to that list this shouldn’t be a problem for you.
2. Perry Belcher says he uses Constant Contact. This is a MAJOR issue for me. I believe in permission marketing. And Constant Contact makes opting in optional not a requirement (unless they changed since I left some years ago).
What this means is that you could add anyone to your list without having the recipients confirm through their email that you have their permission. Though they do in all fairness suggest double opting in and do have it where it can be setup. At Aweber this is a requirement.
“Darren Why Should I care about That?!”
From a consumer perspective: that is why you get so many emails where you never gave permission. Spammers harvest emails and send out bulk spam this way. I am NOT saying that Perry Belcher is doing this because I have no factual evidence to believe otherwise.
From a professional marketers perspective: This is the quickest way to get your emails to your recipients spam boxes. Double opt in (getting permission via confirmation email) is a must for marketers.
In Conclusion
The livelihood, judgment, conviction, and in some cases online execution of Perry Belcher teaches us a very important lesson. Now many might say the lesson is in ethics. But I would rather focus on an equally important lesson, credibility. Credibility is built from trust. Trust is build from faith and time. Yanik Silver says “Your reputation always counts” and he is right.
Is Perry Belcher a guy that crosses the line and deals in grey area’s? I think Perry might agree with me that he does. But what entrepreneur (especially online ) doesn’t? In the USA especially we are raised to NOT be entrepreneurial from the minute we started attending school. We (entrepreneurs) are by nature renegades all of us. But there are some lines you cross and some you do not. Perry is an excellent example of those limits.
Is Perry Belcher the a social media scam artists? That remains to be seen. And that will depend on the feedback from his customers because time tells all truths. We are in one of the most interesting era’s for online entrepreneurship so it will be interesting to see if Perry Belchers reputation either flourishes or withers. The ball is in your court Perry. In time how will you be known? As an all star fundamental player or the king of technical fouls? I will take a quote from the film Carlito’s Way and mega rapper Jay Z “The Streets are Watching.”
BEFORE you comment
I have taken a lot of time to choose my words as carefully as I could so BEFORE you comment please read this article carefully. Also be prepared to defend your position and strongly suggest you select the follow this comment section as to address anything that is addressed to you. Otherwise I understand your respectful silence.
Clearly he is doing this more for the camera than his mom or aunt sitting down. But the question is how many marketers are on Twitter adding thousands of followers without any focus on a niche market?
Your doing everything in the world that would seem to deem attention but there is one problem. You don’t have the right market. Like this little lady in the video your thousands of followers could care less.
Well here is an example of company with some old fashioned knowledge acquirement know how. The old saying is if it is so simple that even a 4 year old can do it then either learn it quick or run out and get a four year old ASAP. Morgan Stanley took the philosophy to heart as they decided to use a 15 year old to brief them on Teens usage of social media in the UK. I think the interesting feedback is about Twitter. The 15 year old young man Matthew Robson, said that Twitter is NOT a favorite of Teens in the UK because they rather use their text credits to text in general instead of tweeting. You can read more here about How Teenagers Consume Media: the report that shook the City.
Whats can Online Entrepreneurs learn from this Story?
Two simple words: niche marketing. I know you might be reading that word all of the time but niche marketing involves gathering information from a specific demographic. Morgan Stanley was smart to do this. You must continually focus and leverage niche opportunities. I always strongly advise that my clients partner with experts in any market that they want to build a niche website. If Morgan Stanley could teach online entrepreneurs one thing is to build your partnership network for your niches.
Below is a piece of the story from Morgan Stanley with a link back to the main article. Whats interesting to note also is their headline. They basically used the Twitter name to gain more attention but the article has nothing to do with Twitter.
Morgan Stanley trumpets Teen’s Twitter tutorial
Peter Lynch famously told investors to “buy what you know” — that is, to invest in the companies that made what they personally used and liked. But Lynch wasn’t afraid to rely on the intuition of people he knew and trusted when they found something in the marketplace that they simply loved: It was Lynch’s wife who clued him in to the appeal of L’Eggs pantyhose. (Or at least that’s how Lynch tells the story.)
Unfortunately, it’s not always so easy to find someone who can so smartly assess the appeal of something you don’t personally know much about. How, for example, can we make sense of new technologies when we aren’t even remotely in the demographic these new new things are aimed at? (It would be a bit like asking grandpa to evaluate the appeal of the Jonas Brothers.)
There are a LOT of secrets that don’t get mentioned on Facebook. Certain do’s and don’ts. Recently I feel compelled to share because of the drama associated with people trying to post advertising on profiles. Which is now a social media no no. I reported several people to the Facebook Nazis when they attempted to do that to me.
I am going to break this down to you short and sweet.
1. Fan Pages: The REAL key to business on Facebook lies in fan pages. Did you know that now that anyone can create a business web, or blog page more options to expand are available. You can create a online presence. But how do you get people to join? Simple cross market your Facebook fan pages by niche.et everyone know on your profile. Then let your Twitter and Friendfeed friends know. Next your blog should post and announce.
I wont lie to you it takes time and attention but done correctly it’s worth it. The key is to set a goal each week and make that goal. Make your goal small don’t go crazy. Remember this is only a sub strategy of your main strategy (growing your presence on Facebook).
2. email marketing: the goal in addition to the social media is to be able to reach potential and actual customers. So you need to add a email signup by someone like aweber.
3. Provocative Profile Posts:don’t post on peoples profiles or email them directly ANY advertising’s. Not only because Facebook will ban you but because it is NOT worth your time. Really want to get traffic? Post on your fan pages and profile pages provocative content with strong headlines. Nothing to get you BANNED. But something to grasps peoples attention. Even on social media content is king!
Want to build your business? Here are some seldom combined rules you should follow immediately.
1. Posting AD’s on your comment area: I am a strait shooter so I am going to reveal that when MySpace started I used to do this for my soul site 4DaSoul.com. But short while following it didn’t seem like such a good idea as people started to promote lesser quality projects. Post comments communicating not promoting. Remember the conversation is the brand.
2. Ask “what is your website about?”: Now this is only IF the person you are asking didn’t leave a link on their social profile to their website. Also if their site doesn’t have a “about me” section. Then its OK. But it they do then please don’t disrespect someone by NOT visiting their site and then asking rude questions like “Are you blogging to promote yourself or to actually share information” when all you have to do is click the link on their profile and find out for yourself.
3. Email or Direct Message your connections: Establish groups to send messages out or if that option isn’t available (like with Twitter) then create a group profile to send out messages. But DO NOT add billboards to profiles and DM and reply to people. That is especially annoying on Twitter because people are replying
4. Asking someone to promote your service or product on their network: A BIG NO NO. Come on people. IF it’s worth promoting people will. The only exception to this is when you promote a charity every now and then. I don’t mind asking for people to RT a charitable event.
Please take these rules seriously as no one will communicate with you more than likely they will just unfollow you. Build relationships that matter as much as you matter about building your relationships.
Last weekend I posted over 50+ idea’s Entrepreneurial Idea’s and Resources on Facebook. I usually save the massive tweets for twitter. But I wanted to share.
