Is Tweetmeme the New Comment Section for Blogs?

Have you noticed that tweetmeme.com is on most blogs including this one? I read a lot of blogs daily and have noticed that bloggers comments have lowered but the tweetmeme are increasing. Is this the new way (or at least one of them) of legitimizing a blogs authority or article popularity? Could be. This is not a endorsement per-se for tweetmeme but it does seem like a great way to legitimately see who from twitter is retweeting your messages. Especially when you get more tweets than you do any other bookmark.
