My Discussion with a Miserable Millionaire

lawImagine being a miserable millionaire while getting $480 a hour with 80 hours a week billing even when you are at home! Imagine being a partner of one of the largest law firms in the US. Now imagine hating it all including your home life. For the sake of privacy (and the fact this guy could sue the crap out of me LOL) I am withholding names. However I wanted to discuss this in detail to ask you a rhetorical question. Are you doing what you really professionally want to do? Are you doing affiliate / internet marketing for money or pleasure? While you are thinking about that let me share more of the conversation I had with the Miserable Millionaire.

My Discussion with a Miserable Millionaire

He talked to his staff like they were worthless. He was always upset, always mad at the world always suspicious for little reason. This man was infamous at the firm. Until one day………..

yachtingI happened to strike up a conversation about boats (yachts). This mans face completely changed in an instant. In an instant he was having a breakdown. That protective pompous ASSett was really becoming a real human being. He no longer talked with a tone of authoritative arrogance. His speech grew with excitement like a kid waking up on Christmas. His shoulders always tense was now relaxed. He even drew closer as if he was talking to an old lodge brother during our lunch. He then and began to explain in detail his passion for yachting, sailing, and other boating activities. I would also learn he was part of the Yale team and actually won a race (I wont say which year) against Harvard. This man (the former miserable millionaire) has more than a passion for boats! The guy loved them!

Which of course led me to the 64,000 question: “How did you get into law?” And as you probably guessed it was a classic scenario. His father pressured him into doing “the smart thing” and getting the law degree like he did. Second generation of attorneys in the family. So I asked him why he didn’t give it a go now? Start a company with boats and shared roughly 12+ idea’s with him. And his answer? This seemingly fearless attorney who legally took down some of the biggest companies in the US said to me “I am afraid”.

He was stuck for so long that the idea of doing something new anything new scared him. And his biggest fear was of failure.

What is your fear? And are you doing what you really professionally want to do? Are you a miserable millionaire? You are a walking millionaire with check that has yet to be deposited in to your bank account (Marshall Sylver quote). Some of us just keep walking a little longer until fruition.
