1. People know the artists your promoting: just because you know them (or yourself doesnt mean they do. never miss and excellent opportunity to introduce them (or you i your an artists reading this).
    2. People have heard the artist’s music: Always be prepared to send music via download is the fastest and cheapest way.
    3. People have seen you perform: Make sure your Youtube Link is very visible! Whether it be a EPK (electronic Press Kit) or live performance.
    4. People want to be added to your mailing list instead of being “asked” (permission marketing): this truly gnaws at me.You constantly add people to your email list with asking them. That whether you want to believe it or not is SPAM.
    5. People are paying attention: Artists just because you care doesn’t mean that others will. Do you know that it takes the average marketer (10) times to get consumers attention? That’s because there is so much information out there. What is your PURPOSE for spreading news about yourself? The answer should be to create a customer. PERIOD. Not a sale but a customer. The difference between the two is that customers are lifelong purchasers of your music. Build a relationship that creates a purchase. Then repeat the process but NEVER assume that people are paying attention to everything you do. Appreciate your fans because they are not obligated to support you.

1. OWN YOUR WEBNAME (Your foundation)

Where in the world for $10 dollars or less can you have access to the entire world from the comfort of your home? Domain registration is less than $10 dollars. Do not give control of your name to anyone! Webmasters included!

They (web designers) can still design websites and you point the domain name to the design. If you have issues in your design or need redesign you change the website designers and hosting. The reason you need to own your own name and site is because MySpace page is your satellite extension of your website.

If you are not ready for a designer and all that is OK. But do not let other people control the ownership of your web properties because of your lack of knowledge. Also develop a email list! I will be listing this in the future as well!

2. OWN YOUR EMAIL (Your connection)

If a thousand fans visit your site a day what’s their excuse for coming back? At this point I know some of you are saying “the music”. But you have to realize that with a trillion dollars being spent in getting peoples attention there is a serious chance they may forget or get side tracked. Wouldn’t it be great if you got their email so if you had a show or new music or other opportunities you could get them to support you?

3. Fan Introduction (Getting to know you)

Remember the first time you met an artists you may have been on the fence about? Yet it was your interaction with them was so personable that you couldn’t help but support them. An artists with a real approach will go over very nicely. Via your website, MySpace, Blog is a clever and personable way to introduce yourself. Then give people a chance to get to know you better via email signups!

4. Virtual House Warming (Getting to know them)

Create an environment to meet your fans. via your website or chat you should setup “talk” sessions with Fans while your music is playing. Talk about music, not just your music but music in general. Talk hobbies and events. you will gain a better repioire with your fans and build an excellent promotional base.

5. Any Questions Session (Building information about you on the web)

The difference between this and a virtual house warming is that this is via forum. Set this up so that anyone over a long period of time (year plus) can ask questions and you answer. What you are developing is a FAQ section on your site that will grow over the years while helping with your search engine ranking. Another reason this is a good idea is that it builds a better connection by being accessible.

6. BONUS: Write a personal song to Fans (Appreciation)

The personable you are the better. Why not highlight some of the great fans at your show or on your site/MySpace by creating a song for them? Something simple recorded and downloadable from your site. Why? Because it personalizes your music to the fans. You no longer are the artists. You are the artists with a personal touch, the artists who the fans tell all o their friends and relatives about. Get it?
