Did you know that there are 3 Tribes of Marketing? Recently I have joined a group called Third Tribe and a popular thread I created caused me to work on a FREE report I released.

The first tribe is lead by Seth Godins group cool smart super loved and popular. According to some this tribe has trouble selling as aggressively as the other tribes.

Then there is the second tribe which some have said that Internet marketers like Frank Kern lead. Not all of the people in this group are GURU scammers. The infamous ones are actually in small amounts. But the problem is that many people don’t see the difference. That’s because the scam guys emulate the real ones. I actually like reading Frank Kerns books. His writings tell stories. Stories you and I can relate to as online professionals no matter what tribe you may reside (or not reside) in. In my opinion a second tribe hangout would be the Warriors Forum.

The Third Tribe was created by Brian Clark, Chris Brogan, and Darren Rowse. The idea is that this tribe is a little more focused on money than the first tribe and less aggressive as the second.  There was a post that gave birth to all of this here.

OK so does that make me an exclusive Third Triber? I don’t think so but I DO feel good about what is happening there and think I will continue to be a member. And I have met some amazingly good people there who’s blogs I read all the time.  I have been a member of Seth Godins Tribes for over a year now. And I also have a profile on the Warriors Forum (2nd Tribe). I think my approach will be moving forward I could do better on first 2 tribes with contributing which I will work harder to do. I think I would like to try to deal with the better sides of all.

In other words I will become a better contributor and learner and see which one kicks me out (laughing). I figured if I call Darren Rowse “Darren number 2″ (you know who is number one right?) enough times maybe I will get kicked out of Third Tribe (laughing again).

PS funny note: all three have haters. And not necessarily from other tribes. Seems like no matter where you go there will always be people mad at mad and upset about it LOL. God bless them all.

Today on Seth Godin Sundays I want to talk about how he did an interesting post today called Everyone’s model of work is a job. What I liked about it is that it basically follows a similar thinking of mine. I believe that anyone can become an entrepreneur but not everyone can become an entrepreneur. Because it is not in everyone’s DNA to be entrepreneurs. No more than it is in everyone’s DNA to work a 9-5 boring job.

In America the worlds most infamously resourceful country we forgot the importance of a real education. The type of education that lies in our ability to find out our passion and discover our talents. The more people that discover their passion, no matter what their profession. The more opportunities we will have to create a better global economy.

There is no one size fit all model for your life. If it doesn’t work change your model. If your miserable change your model. Because it not OK to be OK when God made you brilliantly remarkable in your own way. Find that way you will find yourself. Move that way and you will lead whatever industry your business is in. BE that way and you will change the world.

Thank you Seth Godin for reminding us of the simple things in the simplest ways.

sethgodinThis is the Sunday post that I dedicated to Seth Godin because he is one of my most favorite blogger and mentors on the face of the earth. So each Sunday I am discussing something that will be equally as creative!

A Kreative  Seth Godin Sentence

Once upon a time I discovered the panhandler’s secret to opening acts and rock star. I found out that there was a myth of big salaries (it’s all marketing). All the hype turned out to be nothing. You see I don’t fall for national hype week. Because I know the difference between PR and publicity and the business rules of thumb.

Challenging convention

The smart guys at Contrast came by the office to talk about their thesis of abandoning conventions. It’s the intent of changing what we expect when we use something. Obvious things like the design of a cell phone or subtle things like the design of a door knob. There are terrific benefits to successfully coming up with a solution that invents and leverages a new convention.

I’d argue that there are four things to keep in mind when deciding to challenge a convention. You should incur the costs and hassles of inventing a new way to do things when you can are prepared to deal with all four. The costs can be huge, because a new user convention can slow people down or turn them away. A new financing convention makes it harder to raise money. A new hiring convention causes some people to avoid you…

  1. Notice it. When you make a new way to do something, people are going to notice it. We’ll notice it when the volume knob on the radio doesn’t work the way all the other ones do, or when the navigation on your website isn’t where it ‘should’ be. Is your creativity about the convention? For example, if you make a stereo that sounds better, it’s not clear you should also change the way the volume control works. Noticing the shift in interface doesn’t help sell your concept of better sound.
  2. Talk about it. Often, a new convention leads to conversations. People need to teach other about the ideas in your product or service, or complain about it or debate it. Again, no point changing the convention unless what you want is people to talk about your new convention.
  3. Leverage it. Does the success of the new convention in the marketplace actually help you? Sure, you could invent a new kind of handshake or a new pricing structure. But if it catches on, do you win? Is it at the core of your business model? Which leads to the last one…
  4. Protect it. Once the convention catches on, does the new way of doing things reinforce your position in the marketplace and lead to long-term benefits?

MLK I Have a DreamMonday January 19th (the day before the historic inauguration of Obama) is Martin Luther King Day a national day of service here in the United  States. One of my blog mentors Seth Godin has come up with some excellent idea’s we can do to be of service to others. But in his great fashion his suggestions are web 2.0 style. Seth has 18 ways you can be of service to others online.  I am throwing in my 2 cents (or 2 suggestions). Below (plus the link to the rest of the story) are 20 suggestions you can use to be of service to others online.

Darren Scott Monroe Suggestion #19 Share online resources / tools with others to help them. Monday I am posting a listing of several sites and tools you social-networks-logos2can use to benefit your business in a variety of ways.

Darren Scott Monroe Suggestion #20 Promote (5) friends in your network to your network for no reason at all. Make sure you have a short reason why you chose them. Promote to your MySpace, Linkedin, Facebook, Twitter.

Seths suggestions:

  1. Read a copy of the Lorax to a child that’s never heard it.
  2. Teach someone how to sell their services on Craigslist, or how to use the web to find a job.
  3. Build a Squidoo lens every day for a year about a favorite author or musician and dedicate the proceeds to charity. 300 a year could earn tens of thousands of dollars for a cause you care about. That adds up to serious money.
  4. Start a blog and profile one worthy non-profit every single day.
  5. Go through your house and find beloved books that you’re glad you read… and give them to the library.
  6. Find an artisan and redesign their website or help them figure out how to promote their work.
  7. Create and promote an online petition for a cause you care about.
  8. Make a video that teaches people how to do better in a job interview or balance a checkbook or spot consumer fraud.
  9. Start a Facebook group for like-minded people who support the same non-profit you do. Commit to spending time to promote it, organize the people there and actually create outcomes of value.
  10. Seek out a religion that isn’t yours and volunteer to help build a bridge between your circle and theirs.

Seth Godin is a marketing genius and wrote one of my all time favorite books “Permission Marketing”

Marketeers, Entrepreneurs, Artists Read carefully!:

What Every Good Marketer Knows by Seth Godin:

  • Anticipated, personal and relevant advertising always does better than unsolicited junk.
  • Making promises and keeping them is a great way to build a brand.
  • Your best customers are worth far more than your average customers.
  • Share of wallet is easier, more profitable and ultimately more effective a measure than share of market.
  • Marketing begins before the product is created.
  • Advertising is just a symptom, a tactic. Marketing is about far more than that.
  • Low price is a great way to sell a commodity. That’s not marketing, though, that’s efficiency.
  • Conversations among the members of your marketplace happen whether you like it or not. Good marketing encourages the right sort of conversations.
  • Products that are remarkable get talked about.
